📍 Location of Abu Simbel
Abu Simbel is located in southern Egypt, near the border with Sudan, on the western bank of Lake Nasser. It lies approximately 280 kilometers (175 miles) southwest of Aswan, deep in the Nubian Desert. This remote yet awe-inspiring site is home to the Great Temple of Ramses II and the Temple of Queen Nefertari, carved directly into a sandstone cliff more than 3,000 years ago.
Originally constructed to mark Egypt’s southern boundary and demonstrate the power of the pharaoh, the temples were famously relocated in the 1960s to save them from the rising waters of Lake Nasser after the construction of the Aswan High Dam.
